Peace Day, which is often referred to formally as United Nations Day, is observed every year in October. Another occasion that is celebrated in October is International Children’s Day, which is celebrated during the last week of October. This holiday was originally created by UNICEF to celebrate our cultural diversity and ethnic heritage.

This year, all pre-primary classes (Rooms 1, 2, and 3) will be celebrating both United Nations Day and International Children’s Day on October 24 at 8:45 a.m. We will call our celebration International Peace Day. You and your family are invited to attend.

We ask that you and your child choose a country to represent, perhaps on that is of your heritage, one that you have visited, one where you have family or friends, or simply a country that you and your child find interesting. Please prepare a costume, a flag, and food (for 5 people) that is representative of your chosen country. (Please make flags small, no larger than 5×7.)

Please have your child come to school dressed in the costume of the country he/she represents with a flag on October 24. We will parade around the gym, and then entertain you with a few songs. We have invited other classes to watch the parade. Then we will gather for the day’s highlight, our international potluck lunch, which will be set up in the elementary picnic area at approximately 10:00 a.m.

We and the children are very excited about this event and look forward to working with you to make this a wonderful success. We will announce further details as we approach October 24.

Thank you,
